Panaji Municipal Garden is a popular resting area for Goans especially in evenings and early mornings. The garden was originally called Garcia da Orta Garden, to commemorate a 16th Century physician, who came to Goa to help the sick. In the middle of the garden is a monument honoring the first sea voyage from Europe to India on its 400th anniversary. The foundation was laid by Vasco da Gamma in 1498.
