Chiang Rai Images

11 images Created 29 Jul 2011

Chiang Rai is the main commercial centre in the Golden Triangle region of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. It is an excellent base for exploring the region as trekking areas are near and accessible to town. Often compared to Chiang Mai, the city has a more relaxed small-town atmosphere than most other Thai cities. Area attractions are boat excursions on the Kok River, unique temples such as Wat Rong Khun, Wat Phra Kaew and elephant rides all surrounded by nature.

  • The seven spired chedi at Wat Jet Yot is similar in style to that of its Chiang Mai namesake. Of more aesthetic interest is the wooden ceiling of the front veranda of the main building which features a unique Thai astrological fresco.

  • The Akha are a hill tribe of subsistence farmers known for their artistry. Most of the remaining Akha live in small villages in the mountains of China, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand. The Akha subsist through an often destructive form of slash and burn agriculture which can result in elimination of old growth forest, native animal species and serious soil runoff problems. They are expert farmers who focus on mountain rice, corn, and soybeans that are planted in seasonal shifts. The Akha are also very efficient hunters, though their prey sometimes includes endangered species.

  • Most Thai towns have a clock tower that marks the center of the city which are useful for both the time and an orientation point. This majestic landmark puts on a "show" every night at 9 o'clock, changing colors and become one of Chiang Rai's favorite tourist attractions. The Chiang Rai Clocktower was built to honour his majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

  • Chiang Rai Night Bazaar is located between the bus station and Phaholyothin Road in the center of town. The market is made up of many small stands lining the narrow streets and back alleys. Everything is on display from silk, readymade garments to tattoo etching. The hill tribes sell a selection of old coins, needlework and quilted bedspreads.

  • Baandam Si Dum "Black House" is the Chiang Rai estate of the renowned Thai artist Thawan Duchanee. Baandam is a group of 40 houses where the artist, Thawan Duchanee, spent more than 30 years and devoted himself to design and create this domain. Although the place is called "Black House" in English, rather it is a collection of several houses in a large garden, some of which are not even black.

  • Karen Hill Tribes living along the border with Myanmar in Thailand, The Padaung members of the Burmese Karen are also known as the Padaung or "long-necks" because of the heavy brass rings they wear around their necks. How they came to be "long-necks" is the stuff of legend. Long ago, the headman of the tribe had a dream in which he was told that a tiger was going to kill one of the children in the village, a child that had been born on a Wednesday. Since tigers kill their victims by first breaking their necks, the headman decreed that all children born on a Wednesday should wear heavy brass rings round their necks.

  • Wat Rong Khun is unique in Thailand, as its ubosot or consecrated assembly hall is designed in white color and white glass. White color stands for Lord Buddha's purity; the white glass stands for Lord Buddha's wisdom that "shines brightly all over the Earth and the Universe." The creation of Chalermchai Kositpipat - who volunteered to design the temple at his own expense as an offering to Lord Buddha - he later altered the plan in such a way that Wat Rong Khun developed into a prominent site attracting both Thai and foreign visitors.
