Hue was once the seat of power in Vietnam and ruled by the Nguyen Dynasty from 1802 to 1945. Emperor Bao Dai abdicated when Ho Chi Minh's revolutionary government took power. Hue straddles the Perfume River with the old city and the Citadel on both sides of the waterway. Much of the riverside has been turned into a pleasant promenade. Imperial tombs and the restored Imperial Citadel -a UNESCO World Heritage Site are Hue's claim to fame.
