Jaipur is familiarly known as the “Pink City” and is the largest city in Rajasthan. Jaipur was India's first planned city and is now is a major tourist attraction. It is often called the Pink City in reference to its buildings, originally painted pink to imitate the red sandstone architecture of Mughal settlements. Jaipur has many attractions, including UNESCO world heritage sites Amber Fort, Jaipur City Palace, Jantar Mantar Observatory, and Jal Mahal Floating Palace.

  • Ajmeri Gate is one of the arched entrances into the Pink City of Jaipur. The gate is decorated with floral motifs above the central door. The walls were built by Maharaja Jai Singh when Jaipur was first built as India’s first planned city.

  • Jaipur City Palace was once the seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur.  Within the palace complex, the Chandra Mahal palace is now a museum. The city palace complex has a vast array of courtyards and gardens. The architects fused Rajput, Mughal and European styles of architecture.

  • Hawa Mahal is a one of a kind building because its exterior has 953 windows decorated with intricate latticework. The building is also called "Palace of Winds".  Lal Chand Ustad was the architect of this masterpiece who also planned Jaipur city - much of which is pink colored sandstone like the Hawa Mahal itself.  Hawa Mahal is the symbol and icon of Jaipur “The Pink City”.

  • Raj Mandir Cinema is a famous movie theater in Jaipur. The cinema has shown many movie premieres of Bollywood films.  It was designed by architect W.M. Namjoshi in art moderne style.  The exterior of the building is made up of various shapes, zigzags and curves set into the facade.

  • Jantar Mantar is an array of Indian astronomical instruments. There are several of these in India, though the Jaipur observatory is the largest and best preserved.  Jantar Mantar literally means: calculation instrument.  The observatory is made up of geometric devices in the form of what appears to be modern architecture. These are for measuring time, predicting eclipses and tracking stars.  Though Jantar Mantar looks modern, it was only restored in 1901 and declared a national monument of India in 1948. It is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

  • Kesar Kyari Bagh on Maota Lake is part of the Amber Fort complex and was created  for the women of the harem to admire from above.  The name means "saffron growing garden"  originally it was this plant that grew in this location. It is also called Maunbari garden.

  • Elephant rides are part of the fun of visiting Amer Fort.  Often spelled Amber Fort, the complex  is famous for incorporating Hindu architectural elements into its overall design.  An opulent palace complex inside is built of sandstone and marble. The palace was once lived in by the Rajput Maharajas.

  • Albert Hall, Jaipur was built to honor the Prince of Wales to Jaipur in 1876. Later on the building was turned into a museum to display local products from Rajasthan craftsmen .  The museum serves a dual purpose as an educational center to inspire other craftsmen to improve their skills and educate young Indians.

  • Mughal Garden at Amer Fort is a geometrical garden which is also known as Charbagh. It is called a Mughal garden because of the Islamic design of the surrounding buildings and the garden's style itself.  The purpose of the garden was to enhance the fort's sense of luxury with unessentials such as this special garden for the king.

  • Pitam Niwas Chowk found in the inner courtyard at Jaipur City Palace. Jaipur City Palace, once the palace of the Maharaja of Jaipur, is now a popular Jaipur attraction.  The city palace complex has a vast array of courtyards and gardens. In designing and building Jaipur City Palace, the architects fused Rajput, Mughal and European styles of architecture.

  • Jaipur has so many markets, it is sometimes difficult to tell when one has ended and another has begun.  Baapu Bazaar, Nehru Bazaar, Indira Bazaar markets are all a part of the market jumble of Jaipur. In between and embedded within each of these markets are snack vendors, craftsmen and spices on display.

  • Chapati is unleavened bread common in India and Pakistan.  It is also called roti. The word chapati means "flattened round" in Hindi and they are made of whole wheat dough, water and salt.

  • Indian Handlebar Moustache - Indian men are famous for their moustaches, and nowhere else in India is this cultivated more than in Rajasthan, where it is almost raised to an art form.
