Osaka is commonly considered Japan's "commercial" center with its population devoted to business. Osaka is also known for its salty, in-your-face frankness not common elsewhere in Japan. Under the name Naniwa, Osaka was the capital of Japan from 683 to 745 long before the upstarts at Kyoto took over. Even after the capital was moved elsewhere, Osaka continues to play an important role as a hub for business, manufacturing, land, sea and river transportation.
