Guanyin and 1000 Arms - The Buddhist legend from the Complete Tale of Guanyin and the Southern Seas: vowing to never rest until she had freed all sentient beings from reincarnation but despite her best efforts she realised that there were still unhappy beings so her head split into eleven pieces. Hearing these cries for help Guanyin attempted to reach out to all those who needed aid and found that she now had a thousand arms to let her reach out to those in need.
