Yokai Monster Street - Yokai are a type of supernatural spirits or monsters. In Japanese folklore, there is a wide range of yokai, ranging from amusingly mischievous to downright evil. Some are humanlike, some are animals and others are inanimate objects that have come to life. Officially Yokai Monster Street in Kyoto is Ichijo-dori, where more than thirty of these creatures have been created and decorate the small shops that they haunt. Some of the yokai figurines are well crafted while others are haphazardly done. You will see all the favorites: kappa, tengu, tanuki plus quite a few others that are less familiar. Monster art markets are held on the street, as well as a Yokai Monster Costume Parade every in October where these creatures really come to life! Yokai Street is the perfect antidote for visitors to Kyoto experiencing “temple overload” and want something less sober.
