Inubosaki Lighthouse is a on Cape Inubo, in Choshi, Chiba Prefecture. It was one of the few lighthouses in Japan whose original lens was a first order Fresnel lens. The lighthouse is located in the Suigo-Tsukuba Quasi-National Park. The need for a lighthouse for the safety of vessels on the northeastern approaches to Tokyo was recognized at an early time after Japan was opened to the West. The lighthouse was designed by British engineer Richard Brunton from Scotland, who was under contract by the Meiji government. Brunton constructed another 25 lighthouses during his career in Japan.
