nishikigoi-carp-04.jpg
Nishikigoi belong to the carp genus of the teleostei class. Ornamental carp originated in Central Asia and were brought to Japan about a thousand years ago. In the early part of the 19th century, color mutations appeared among carp being cultivated for food. Around the beginning of the Meiji Era superior colored koi of the Ki Utsuri, Asagi and Sarasa were produced. The Taisho Era saw black-and-white patterned Shiro Utsuri, Ki Utsuri, Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku and others color mutations. Today, the production of Nishikigoi koi carp has spread over Japan and has become the word expressing the ornamental carp. There are about one hundred different Nishikigoi varieties including many with extraordinary pattern differences. For purposes of appreciation and carp show entries, Zen Nippon Airinkai divides Nishikigoi into 16 specific groups.
