The Rue des Teinturiers is a cobblestone street that follows a small canal of the River Sorgue in Avignon. The history of this street and its residents is a reflection of the history of Avignon itself. Its nickname the street of the waterwheels comes from the textile industry that flourished here between the 14th and 19th centuries when water filled the moats at the city walls and powering the textile mills. The 16th century saw the birth of the cotton factories that provided work for the cleaners, dyers and tanners in the area.
