The iris is a flower that blooms in late spring and early summer, usually peaking in June. These delicate flowers blossom everywhere in Japan during this time coloring the country with bright but elegant shades of violet, purple and yellow. Irises also make an appearance in historical documents, artworks, and food such as wagami sweets. There are many species of irises in Japan, including native water irises - hana shobu - and the Japanese iris - ayame.
