Kencho-ji is a Rinzai Zen temple in Kamakura which ranks first among Kamakura's so-called Five Great Zen Temples and is the oldest Zen training monastery in Japan. The large Zen garden behind the Hojo is called Shin-ji Ike "Mind character pond" which is shaped like the Chinese character for mind. The garden was designed by famous Zen monk, scholar, poet and garden designer Muso Soseki.
