The Genkan is a traditional Japanese entrance for a house or apartment. The main function of a genkan is for the removal of shoes before entering the main part of the house. Shoes are usually turned to face the door so they can easily be slipped on when leaving or placed into a getabako or shoe box/shoe closet.
