Meiji Shrine Entrance Shimenawa - Meiji Shrine, or Meiji Jingu is dedicated to the deified spirit of Emperor Meiji. When Emperor Meiji died in 1912 the Japanese wished to pay their respects to this influential Japanese figure. It was for this reason that Meiji Shrine was constructed in 1920.
