Ryotanji Temple is located at the foot of Sawayama Hill. This temple is known as an Ii Family temple who built Hikone Castle and includes a tea ceremony room used by Naosuke Ii. Famous fusuma door paintings by the artist Kyoroku Morikawa, a student of Basho Matsuo, can also be admired here. Ryotanji Temple is most famous for its Japanese garden named Fudaraku. With the Pure Land of the Kannon, Mt. Fudaraku, in the center and 48 large and small stones placed around it in a radial pattern, this renowned garden forms an extraordinary scene - besides this special garden there are smaller gardens.
