Dejima Chief Factor's Office -Dejima, literally "protruding island" was an artificial island in the bay of Nagasaki. Originally a settlement for the Portuguese until they were removed from Japan, instead it was turned into a Dutch trading post during Japan's self-imposed isolation from the rest of the world from 1641 until 1853. Japan still needed technology from the rest of the world as well as limited contact, and so it installed the Dutch at Dejima to provide these.
