Ruins of St. Mary's Cathedral, often known as Urakami Cathedral. Construction of the original Urakami Cathedral, was a brick Romanesque building, began in 1895, after the long-standing ban on Christianity in Japan was lifted. The atomic bomb that fell on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945 detonated in Urakami only 500 m (1640 ft) from the cathedral completely destroying it. Urukami Cathedral was completely rebuilt in 1959. Only a few stones and pieces remain.
