Red Lotus Lake Kumphawapi near Udon Thani is a special lake officially called Nong Han Kumphawapi though Thai locals call it Talay Bua Daeng meaning: “Sea of Red Lotuses”. From November through March, the lake sprouts millions of pink lotus blossoms. The perfect time to see them is in the early morning when the flowers open up. Though the lake may appear to be vast, and is often called the “red lotus sea” this freshwater lake is very shallow, with an average depth of only one meter. Local villagers trace the origins of the lake to a tragic love myth, adding to the local color. Visitors appreciate the vibrant, lotus blossoms which are really more pink than red, never mind the name. Many Asians including Thais eat lotus blossoms.
