Chiran was home to more than 500 samurai residences during the late Edo period. Part of the charm of the Chiran Samurai Residence Complex lies in the stone wall lined paths covered in ivy and other greenery and with sculpted hedges. The samurai homes and landscaped gardens are one of the main treats of Kagoshima Prefecture. The Chiran Samurai Residence Complex has been designated as an Important Preservation District of Traditional Buildings by the Japanese government.. The seven gardens are recognised as places of National Scenic Beauty. The Mori family garden was created in the tsukiyama sensui style, that is to say with rocks representing mountains, and a koi pond. The other six gardens: are built in a dry garden style, using shirasu pumice and volcanic ash to represent water. The use of pumice in karesansui sdry gardens is only found in Chiran.
