56.1 Shikina-en 識名園 Connected to Shuri Castle is the unique Shikina-en Garden which combines elements of Japanese, Chinese and Okinawan influences.
It was built at the end of the 18th century as a second home for the royal family of the Ryukyus and to entertain VIP guests. Its restoration took more than 20 years. The garden's focal point is a hexagonal pavilion. Designed as a strolling garden, it is meant to be walked around rather than viewed from one particular angle. The garden incorporates both Japanese and Chinese elements of gardening combined with tropical plants, making it uniquely Okinawan.
