Machiaishitsu or Machiai resting area for visitors at Tea Ceremony House at Shinagawa Historical Museum - Traditional Japanese architecture is designed around specific purposes. The chashitsu literally tea room is one special type of architecture, usually very small and made of natural materials: wood, plaster, reed tatami floords, and shoji paper windows. The special architectural style that developed for chashitsu is called sukiya style or specifically sukiya zukuri. It has come to indicate a style of designing public facilities and private homes based on tea house aesthetics. Features of chashitsu typically include a tokonoma alcove; subdued colors, and the size is ideally 4.5 tatami mats.
