Ananda temple is considered one of the masterpieces of Mon architecture. Ananda is also the finest, largest and best preserved of the Bagan temples. During the 1975 earthquake Ananda suffered considerable damage but has been totally restored. It is said to have been built around 1105 by King Kyanzittha, this perfectly proportioned temple notes the stylistic end of the Early Bagan period and the beginning of the Middle period. In 1990 on the 900th anniversary of the temple's construction, the temple spires were gilded.
