Built under order from the French Governor during colonial times, Dalat Palace opened in 1922. Originally called the Lang Bian Palace Hotel. Soon after being discovered by Professor Alexandre Yersin in 1893, the hill station of Dalat was created on the Lang Bian plateau to give French colonists a place to cool their heels from the swelter of Saigon. Construction of Dalat started in 1905 but a grand hotel was necessary to attract high society of Saigon. The Lang Bian Palace Hotel opened in 1922, then the largest building of the area facing the lake. Dalat literally developed around the hotel. It has remained open as a hotel since its opening, even through wars and uncertain times. The Dalat Palace Hotel has been home away from home to the famous and celebrated from all over the globe for decades.
