  • Dekotora is an abbreviation for decoration truck. These gaudy, tricked-up trucks are usually found in rural areas of Japan that make much of cars, trucks and vehicles. Though artistically decorated trucks and buses can be found outside Japan, what sets the Japanese version apart is the inspiration, level of expertise and finish on the lighting apparatus and paint jobs. They are usually best viewed when illuminated, thanks to flashy lights, neon, ultraviolet lights and strobes. Occasionally they are even fitted with fancy interiors, with chandeliers and other paraphernalia to give them an added panache. These unique trucks first came onto the scene in the 1970s, with the Japanese movie “Trucker Guys” and have morphed ever since into new creative and increasingly-flashy designs over the years. Some follow historical themes, while others show an interest in animals, tigers and dragons being favorites. Even some video games have taken on the theme of dekotora, with trucks becoming heroes or villains.

  • Ubon Candles - Presenting candles to monks in the past did not include a parade and candle contest like Ubon does at present. Ubon is famous for its candle parade which came about during the time when Prince Sappasittiprasong, was made governor who saw the injuries villagers suffered during their rocket festival. The Prince ordered the rocket festival to stop, and for a candle festival with candles being presented to monks to take its place. A new method of decorating the candles came about by casting in moulds and then attached to the candle body. In this way the carving of designs on the surface of Ubon candles began. Beeswax is taken from bees’ nests then melt the beeswax and then put in a cotton wick into the hot beeswax then left until it is cool enough to be rolled.

  • 29. Futarasan 二荒山神社 Futarasan Shrine is much older than its more lavish neighbor, Toshogu Shrine. Futarasan was founded in 782 by Shodo Shonin, the Buddhist monk who introduced Buddhism to Nikko and also founded nearby Rinnoji Temple. This is an unusual juxtaposition of Shinto and Buddhism, particularly since they were both founded by a Buddhist monk - presumably to keep his options open. At the back of the shrine there is a spring of pure holy water, so pure that it is used for making sake.

  • Ornate Paris Door at Saint Severin - Thousands of doors and gates adorn buildings in Paris. Some of the best are on government offices, cathedrals and churches, as well as a few chateau. However, any self-respecting contractor with a decent budget probably spent a lot of consideration in installing suitable doors, windows, grill work and even doorknobs. Some of these gates, doors and windows are very simple, while others are extravagant works of art. The styles of these doors tell about the history of France. As you walk across the 20 arrondissements of Paris, you will discover Gothic, Renaissance, Haussmann and Art Nouveau door styles. It is up to you to take the time to look for little details of these Paris’ most beautiful doors with statues, bas-reliefs, mascarons, gold-leaf, grills, handles and door knobs.

  • Versailles Fountain - Chateau de Versailles is laid out over 800 hectares with large sprawling gardens and fountains. Most of the gardens were designed by Andre Le Notre and are as breathtaking as the Palace itself. The gardens are big on symmetry and adorned by a massive number of sculptures, groves and fountains, the gardens represent royal French aesthetics and power at the time of the Sun King. The numerous fountains found within the bosques and gardens are occasionally active with water, especially on weekends, however, because of water shortages and drought they are not often working.
