  • Ornate Paris Door at Saint Severin - Thousands of doors and gates adorn buildings in Paris. Some of the best are on government offices, cathedrals and churches, as well as a few chateau. However, any self-respecting contractor with a decent budget probably spent a lot of consideration in installing suitable doors, windows, grill work and even doorknobs. Some of these gates, doors and windows are very simple, while others are extravagant works of art. The styles of these doors tell about the history of France. As you walk across the 20 arrondissements of Paris, you will discover Gothic, Renaissance, Haussmann and Art Nouveau door styles. It is up to you to take the time to look for little details of these Paris’ most beautiful doors with statues, bas-reliefs, mascarons, gold-leaf, grills, handles and door knobs.

  • 29. Futarasan 二荒山神社 Futarasan Shrine is much older than its more lavish neighbor, Toshogu Shrine. Futarasan was founded in 782 by Shodo Shonin, the Buddhist monk who introduced Buddhism to Nikko and also founded nearby Rinnoji Temple. This is an unusual juxtaposition of Shinto and Buddhism, particularly since they were both founded by a Buddhist monk - presumably to keep his options open. At the back of the shrine there is a spring of pure holy water, so pure that it is used for making sake.

  • Only the stone facade remains of the iconic Church of St. Paul's in Macau. The church was built in 1602 but in 1835 a fire razed it leaving only the dramatic façade standing in four colonnaded tiers complete with carvings and statues. Confucius, the founder of Confucianism, was born over 2,500 years ago in Shandong Province as the second son of a military man. He busied himself with study and preaching to his many disciples. His most famous writing is The Analects of Confucius.
