  • Siberia is a lonely, empty place and it especially seems so at twilight. During the long, harsh winters it seems especially empty and desolate. Clearly, the best season to take the trip is from May through September. The comfort of the train, congenial traveling companions and plenty of food from the platform or diner make the trip a jolly experience. One that you will never forget.

  • Jeepneys are a popular means of public transportation in the Philippines and were originally made of abandoned US army jeeps left behind after World War II. Jeepneys are known for flamboyant decorations and funny names given by their owners such as "One Love" or "Cry Me a River". They have become almost a symbol of Filipino culture and ingenuity. The word Jeepney derives from a combination of jeep and jitney. At the end of WWII jeeps were stripped down, metal roofs were added for shade; and they were decorated with vibrant colors and ornaments.

  • Pirate Ship on Lake Ashi- known as Ashinoko is a scenic lake in Hakone. The lake is known for its views of Mt. Fuji. Several ferries cruise the lake, providing scenic views for passengers. One of the boats is a full-scale replica of a man-of-war pirate ship. A number of pleasure boats and ferries traverse Lake Ashi or Ashinoko on which passengers can enjoy the scenic views. These pirate ships are somehow to enhance the excursion - though Hakone has never been known as an enclave of pirates one can only wonder at the reason for the decorations on these boats.

  • Halloween costumes and trick-or-treating has Western roots, but in recent years Halloween has become popular in Japan. Wookies, batwomen, unicorns, vampires and vampirettes, not to mention a smattering of cosplayers decked out in new rags. Japan is a serious contender in the halloween costume game. Large events are held the last week of October, from Tokyo Halloween at Odaiba, to Shibuya Costume Street Party. Originally the only Halloween events in Japan were when bands of westerners took over the Yamanote Line in Tokyo around Halloween midnight trying to spook ordinary commuter passengers for fun. The fun has caught on.
