Or red rock. The water appears to be red but  turns clear once taken out from the river and therefore a reflection of the rock formations that make up the landscape

  • Lotus Pond at Garan, the sacred complex of temple buildings with a red bridge and a small island is called Hasu-ike, the pond of lotus.  It is said that the a good-natured female dragon queen, Nagirajni, appeared in the Lotus Pond after a local priest, Monk Jiko of Zuisoin Monastery invited the dragon to the tiny island in the middle of the pond to help bring water during a time of severe drought.

  • Alternatively called Bake-jizo, Narabi-jizo (Jizos in a line) or Hyaku-jizo (100-Jizo), a group of mysteriously aligned Jizo patiently sit along the Daiya River and Jiunji Temple. There is a group of about 70 Jizos along the Bake Jizo Trail in Nikko. At one time there were 100 jizos along this trail. However, some of those were washed away by flooding in 1902.
