  • Monks at Wat Phra Pathom - At 120 meters this massive brick stupa is the largest in the world. It also claims to being Thailand's oldest Buddhist temple, dating back to the 6th century, although the present structure is mostly the handiwork of King Mongkut and his successors. The stupa is said to house a relic of the Buddha, but you can circumambulate the chedi in the inner courtyard. The temple is officially called Phra Pathommachedi and is located in the town of Nakhon Pathom. The name Phra Pathommachedi means Holy Chedi of the Beginning.

Also at Wat Prayoon is a small museum of Buddha images and memorial gardens with ponds full of turtles. The shallow pool has some turtles swimming around Khao Mo Shrine and its Chinese-style rockery.

  • Wat Phra Kaeo Noi is the small ubosot on top of the mountain Khao Wang. It is visible from far and nicely mixes in with the Phra Nakhon Khiri Royal Palace and several chedi's. It is modelled after the temple of the same name in Bangkok's Grand Palace and the assembly of buildings embedded into the green forest on the hill is the dream of every photographer. Next to the ubosot is Chedi Phra Sutthasela, a red sandstone prang and three pavilions.

  • Wat Phra Kaew in Chiang Rai was once known as Wat Pa Yeah - the Temple in the Golden Bamboo Forest - because it was surrounded by a  bamboo grove. Its name was changed to Wat Phra Kaew in 1434 after its chedi was struck by lightning revealing the Phra Kaew Marakot  Buddha within. A replica  Phra Kaew Marakot image was carved in China of Canadian jade and stands within the temple today.
