  • Siberia is a lonely, empty place and it especially seems so at twilight. During the long, harsh winters it seems especially empty and desolate. Clearly, the best season to take the trip is from May through September. The comfort of the train, congenial traveling companions and plenty of food from the platform or diner make the trip a jolly experience. One that you will never forget.

  • Jorakuji Temple is temple No. 14. This temple has one of the most unusual courtyards of the entire pilgrimage. Its compound was built on an uneven rock bed with not one flat spot throughout. Jorakuji is also known as the Temple of Everlasting Peace. Kobo Daishi carved a statue of Maitreya in sacred wood, built the temple, and set up the statue as the main object of veneration in the temple. The legend here is that a woman carried her crippled husband five times around the entire pilgrimage, praying to Kobo Daishi to cure him. On the sixth circuit, they swore to commit suicide if he wasn't healed by the end of that trip. When they reached temple No. 14 the husband was healed and they walked the rest of the pilgrimage together. It is also said that if a diabetic prays and drinks the boiled leaves of the yew tree beside the Main Hall, they will be cured.

  • The World’s Shortest Escalator - <br />
More’s Department Store has an eslcalator with only 5 steps, which is almost completely useless even for the chronically lazy. It seems to have no real purpose, other than to qualify as “The World’s Shortest Escalator” in the Guinness Book of World Records. This majestic little gem is famous, and you will see people riding it several times in amazement just to be able to say “I rode the world’s shortest escalator for no real reason”, especially since the trip takes less than 5 seconds. The “Puchicalator” is useless in so many ways, except for its novelty. rOn the other hand, the world’s longest escalator is in Central Hong Kong, not too far behind is the one in Kyoto Station, that will take you halfway up to the stars.
